Self-confidence is defined as:
“a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities and judgement.”
Where does one acquire self-confidence from though?
Let’s look at where self-confidence comes from. Self-confidence is a feeling which comes from performing challenging actions then seeing them through to completion with superior execution and efficiency.
Let’s examine this. Is one born with it? Can it be bought at a price?
You can’t be self-confident an unconventional monetary sense, however, you can and will have to pay for it with your ego. You see the ego doesn’t like to feel pain, it doesn’t like to feel weakness and it certainly doesn’t like a harsh judgment from others.
The easiest way for the ego not to experience feelings associated with shortcomings, failure and of being less than others, is not to fail at all.
This “neurological fail safe” (excuse the pun) keeps you stuck though.
It’s a double-edged sword that we’re dealing with here as if you don’t attempt something, how can you get any results from it, as you’ve done nothing?
On the other hand, if you do try something, you must get a result and yes it’s very possible, you’ll fail, but here’s the crazy thing about, trying and failing though…. You’ll learn from your mistakes!
Newton’s 3rd law states:
“For every action there was and there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
In other words, do something get something, do nothing get nothing.
Again, you may fail if you try, but you’ll most definitely take something valuable away with you from the experience, namely information that could be used and applied the next time you take on your next big project and you’ll be better prepared for it, than the latter.
At the beginning, though you must be willing to fail, in order to learn, what you’ll need to know so that you can move forwards. I don’t think a person exists today, to be honest with you, that didn’t experience weakness at some stage in their life.
I mean, if people became self-confident by osmosis, or without a struggle, without trial and error…We wouldn’t have such great people in our midst.
These great people became self-confident, through showing resolve during hard times, having the courage to keep going, despite being told they weren’t good enough or that they should give up and try something else.
These people experienced everything, you, me and every other person on the planet experienced and then some, at some stage like loss of a loved one, financial insolvency, relationship issues, racism, torment from others.
The difference is, they refused to give up, to stop learning and educating themselves on the subject, which they needed to become knowledgeable in. So that they could become the person they needed to become, in order for them to get from where they were, to where they wanted to be!
This determination and courage or their self-confidence muscle develop and grows.
That’s’ right, self-confidence is like a muscle it comes from doing the same thing over and over again until you get so good at doing it, you know it’s almost impossible to fail at it.
This is why some of the most influential people on the planet, are who they are to the rest of the world, and this is why Mugendo is the perfect vehicle for helping anyone become more self-confident, at their own speed.
You see at Mugendo Martial Arts Academy, we understand everyone is different and has different ideas, about why they train in the martial arts. So, when you train with us you’re shown technical, sometimes difficult movement and yes, we’ll allow you make mistakes, but you’ll learn from them!
